Processes and Risk Factors of Uterine Prolapse

Dr. Chad Hill owns and operates Siloam Springs Women's Center in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, where he cares for patients as an obstetrician-gynecologist. Dr. Chad Hill offers treatment for a variety of conditions, including uterine prolapse.

Uterine prolapse is a condition in which the uterus slips from its normal position and descends into the vagina. Normally, a network of muscles and ligaments support the structure of the uterus and hold it in place within the pelvis. If any of this supporting tissue becomes weak or stretched, the uterus succumbs to gravity and may either sink partially into the vagina or descend so low that some uterine tissue protrudes from the vaginal canal.

Women of any age can experience uterine prolapse, although it is more common among women who have gone through at least one vaginal delivery and subsequent menopause. Women who have had difficult deliveries or given birth to large babies are more likely to experience uterine prolapse, as are those who have chronic bowel straining or cough. Women who lift heavy objects regularly are similarly at risk, as are those who are obese or overweight.
